SASSA Old Age Grant December 2025 : New Amount, Payment Day And Eligibility Revealed

SASSA Old Age Grant December 2025 : The festive season will be more manageable for South African seniors as SASSA has not only announced the December 2025 Old Age Grant payment date but also the new grant amount and eligibility criteria. For many older people who depend on this monthly support, the announcement provides much needed certainty at a time when household bills usually go up.

Payment In Early December Is Confirmed

Like in past years, the Old Age Grant will be paid in December much earlier than typically to assist pensioners to avoid the holiday crowd and to make sure they can access their funds safely. The early payments are also a way to facilitate the older persons to manage their festive-season expenses, such as groceries, electricity, medical needs and December travel.

SASSA is advising pensioners not to hurry to the collection points on the first morning, while reminding beneficiaries that their money is still in their bank card or account until they decide to withdraw it.

Updated 2025 Grant Amount Reflected In December

December payment will be the first one to reflect the adjustments on the Old Age Grant amount that were applied in 2025. Even though the increase was minor, it still plays an important role as a financial support for the elderly who use it to cover their daily livelihoods.

The new amount will be processed automatically for pensioners and there will be no need for them to apply again or present new documents unless SASSA asks for verification.

Who Is Eligible For The Old Age Grant?

Another thing that SASSA did was to inform people about the basic criteria that they have to meet in order to qualify for the Older Persons Grant. The applicant must:

  • Be at least 60 years old.
  • Have South African citizenship, permanent residency or be a refugee.
  • Not be in receipt of any other social grant on his/her name.
  • Have an income below the threshold for the year.
  • Meet SASSA’s means test criteria.

Most of the beneficiaries are still automatically eligible, however some may be selected for review if their income, bank details or ID information has changed.

SASSA Warns Pensioners About Scams

SASSA has suggested that older persons should take more precautions as there would be more money in circulation in December. During the festive period, scammers often strike seniors by sending fake SMSes or pretending to offer “bonus payments.”

Pensioners are advised that SASSA does not impose any fees for grant payments and will never ask for PIN numbers or banking passwords.
