Yellow Number Plate Rules 2025 : Motorists in South Africa are being urged to pay attention to the new Yellow Number Plate rules, which will be implemented in 2025 as part of the country’s comprehensive road-safety and vehicle-identification enhancement programs. Why So Yellow Plates?
The use of yellow plates is not a new thing for the world; several countries have already implemented this in their countries mainly for improved night-time visibility and easy recognition by enforcement cameras. South African Government is taking this route for:
- Visibility enhancement in darkness and bad weather
- Prevention of extracted and fake license plates
- Better detection of ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems
- Facilitating tracking of unattributed and stolen vehicles
According to the officials, the above-mentioned modifications can be regarded as parts of a long-term modernization effort aimed at aligning the country’s road-safety standards with the international best practices of the day.
Who Must Switch To Yellow Plates?
As per the updated regulation, the under mentioned types of vehicles will have to use yellow number plates:
- All the vehicles that will be newly registered from 2025 onwards.
- Vehicles that are going through ownership change.
- Motorist replacing lost or damaged or stolen number plates.
- Vehicles that are marked for compliance checks during traffic enforcement.
The existing vehicles that are using standard white plates may be allowed to continue for a short duration, however, a phased mandatory rollout is expected to take place over the coming years.
The New Plates Key Features
The yellow plates that are going to be introduced are going to have the following features:
- Coating that is reflective and highly visible.
- Anti-cloning security elements which are micro-dots or QR-linked identifiers.
- Font and spacing that are standardised.
- Compatibility with the cameras of the national enforcement system.

Penalties For Non-Compliance
Drivers who do not comply with the yellow plate requirement may incur:
