R1,050 SASSA Festive Season Boost : The government has already announced a special SASSA top-up of R1,050 for eligible pensioners in December 2025, which will be given to millions of South African elderly individuals as a financial relief during the holiday season. The temporary boost comes at a time when there is usually an increase in the costs of food, electricity, and transport during Christmas and New Year vacation.
The additional payment will, as per the initial reports, be directly credited to the monthly grant of the qualified pensioners without the need for them to apply separately, thus, no older citizen will lose the benefit. For most of the old people living on fixed pensions, this extra amount comes as a very important support against the rising living costs.
Reasons For The Introduction Of The R1,050 Top-Up
The top-up for December is one measure taken by the state to offer vulnerable groups some relief as part of its wider seasonal support package. In cases of inflation impacting everyday items, the politicians have argued that the extra amount will enable the elderly people to buy:
- Holiday food
- Heating and lighting costs
- Medical and transport expenses
- Family support during festive gatherings

Who Qualifies For The R1,050 SASSA Top-Up?
The additional payment will be offered to:
- Recipients of the Older Persons Grant who are 60-74 years old.
- Recipients of the Older Persons Grant who are 75 or older.
- Pensioners getting their grants through banks, SASSA cards, Postbank, and cash pay points.
Reapplication or additional documents are not required. Seniors who already receive the Older Persons Grant will automatically get the R1,050 on the scheduled date.
Pension Payment Schedule For December 2025
SASSA has arranged the top-up to coincide with the regular pension payment cycle. The payments for December 2025 of Older Persons Grants are expected to be made on:

The regular monthly pension and the R1,050 top-up will be visible on the same day for all beneficiaries.

The R1,050 will be credited to the pensioners’ preferred mode of payment:
- Bank accounts
- SASSA Gold Cards
- Postbank Cash Points
- Retailers that have been approved
SASSA recommends that the elderly keep their mobile phones charged to get SMS notifications and not to reveal personal information to someone who claims to be able to “hasten” the payment.
